SMC Blogiversary

Today, Southern Meets Chic officially turns one year old!! On one hand, it seems longer than a year because so much has happened, in life and with my blog. But, on another, it seems like a short amount of time because there’s so much further I want to go and so many more things I want to do. I never dreamed when I started my blog that in just one year I would be where I am now! My blog has opened doors and brought me opportunities that I might not have gotten otherwise. I’ve had the chance to work with countless local boutiques such as Trés Carmen Boutique, Gwynn’s, StyleDwell and Peyton William. Then there’s all of the amazing photographers I’ve gotten to shoot with, like the lovely ladies responsible for these perfect pictures, Shauntae and Laura of Amore Photography. There’s also Susan Lloyd Photography, Katie Capo of Catherine Ann Photography, Carissa Cady Photography and Terrence Edwards of Current Visuals. In September, I became the Charleston Market Editor for Carolina STYLE Magazine, which has brought me the opportunity to work with some extremely talented and amazing contributors on a daily basis! I’ve contributed to several other blogs such as Coastal Bride and Charleston Fashion Design. I’ve worked as a stylist or style assistant on some fabulous shoots with amazing teams and have another one of those coming up this week! Most recently, I’ve joined the Scarlet Plan & Design team as a Senior Bridal Stylist. And now, I’m getting ready to head to New York City for Fashion Week!! I am SO thankful to have all of these businesses and people in my life and to have been able to work creatively with each and every one of them! Additionally, I’ve made some of my absolute best friends through blogging!! The blogging community in Charleston is thriving and full of amazingly sweet and talented girls and women who all support each other in a fabulous way. Y’all are the BEST and i’m so blessed and happy to have met so many wonderful people with the same interests as me! Y’all know I love ya!!

Let’s reminisce for a minute and look back to how Southern Meets Chic came about… It all started as my New Year’s 2014 resolution! I had followed so many bloggers for so long and always thought to myself how much I would enjoy doing that! Todd and I were engaged, and I hadn’t been working for a year or two. Having worked all my adult life, it was a bit of a struggle for me to not have something of my own to do. I love being home with my husband, but I needed something to do on my own to fulfill myself more. That’s when I got serious about starting a blog. I made it my New Year’s resolution and purchased my domain on January 2nd 2014. I was trying to get everything perfect (which now I realize will never be that way) before my first post. But, mother nature had another idea!! If you’re a Charleston local, you’ll remember the “Snowmageddon 2014” aka the small ice storm that you northerners would laugh at, but, we never get anything like this!! The streets were snowy and trees completely iced over, making a beautiful backdrop for my first shoot! I didn’t have that great of an outfit to blog, but I was determined to get pictures in this rare scenery. To this day, those lavender Hunter boots remain my most pinned picture on Pinterest! I started SMC not with a business in mind, but as a creative outlet for myself. I needed something to put my heart and soul into that was just a project for me! I had no idea that it would grow as quickly as it has and that y’all would actually be interested in what I’m wearing and my silly and sometimes run on writing. I’m so incredibly humbled by all of you and thankful to have readers that engage and stick with me, even through weeks of no posts!! I cannot thank y’all enough for the past year of support and following!! It’s been a truly magical year and none of this would’ve been possible without my readers!!

Last, but certainly not least, I have to thank my husband, Todd. Not only is he obviously a huge part of my life, but he is an integral part of Southern Meets Chic! While I’ve had the opportunity to work with tons of fabulous photographers, the majority of my pictures are taken by him. No, he’s not a professional photographer, but yes, he’s read manuals and taken classes and practiced, just to be able to take better photos for me. I must say, he’s gotten pretty darn good! I’ve dragged him all over town to take blog pictures, with minimal complaints. He puts up with having to take outfit pics in public and not touching his food before I snap an Insta. Basically, he’s the most patient man on this earth and I am so beyond blessed to have him! This blog truly truly would not be possible without him, whether it’s taking photos or encouraging me to do new things and take new business approaches, he is a driving force behind SMC. And although he says he wants to start a blog about how your spouse shouldn’t start a blog, I’m convinced he’s pretty into it!! Seriously though babe, I couldn’t do this without you and I love you so very much!!

I just want to thank all of you again- the businesses and people I’ve been blessed to work with, my readers and my husband and family- down to my Grandmother who reads every single post, I wouldn’t be where I am without any of you and I am so thankful to have all of you in my life! XOXO

Finally!! I can share my newest venture with y’all! I’m so excited to announce that I have joined the Scarlet Plan & Design team as a bridal stylist! Along with fellow stylist and friend, Alden deHart, we will be launching Scarlet Styles this Saturday at the Scarlet Wedding Tour here in Charleston.

To tell you a bit about Scarlet Plan & Design it is owned by head planner and creator, Sara Skinner. She’s not your traditional planner and enjoys thinking outside of the box to bring unique, quirky weddings to the table. But, don’t worry, we love the traditional southern weddings as well! Hellooo, Southern Meets Chic- that will definitely continue to translate into my bridal style.

maddison-row-charleston-52

Alden and I will be working closely with the brides to assist with all of their bridal styling needs, from day of to honeymoon packing, we do it all! We ensure that your entire wedding party has a cohesive look, with each other, as well as the overall style and design of your wedding. We will first meet with the wedding planner to go over theme and venue, then consult with the bride on likes/dislikes, measurements and a personal style quiz. After this, we will work creatively together to curate a personalized mood board and then the fun part, dress shopping!

There are several different packages to choose from and a la carte options to help each bride customize our services to her specific needs. While we are working under Scarlet Plan & Design, if you have a planner from a different company, we are happy to work with you as well!! However, Scarlet clients do receive a nice discount.

After my May 2014 wedding (that I spent 2 years planning), I could not be more thrilled to be back in the bridal world! Not only do I look forward to creating more Pinterest wedding boards or having an excuse to buy wedding magazines, but I cannot wait to create beautiful memories for Charleston brides!

A bit on this photo shoot- you know us ladies can’t do anything without pictures to document it! So, of course, we needed some bridal styling shots for the Scarlet Styles website! With the lovely Katie Capo of Catherine Ann Photography behind the camera, gorgeous Taylor girl (aka Holy City in Heels) as our bride and the beautiful setting of Maddison Row, this shoot turned out fabulous! I’m kinda obsessed with this Kardashian-esque outfit. That’s right, I admitted it, it’s totally Kardashianish- and I’m not mad about it.

Sassy Pants

DSC_0149DSC_0136DSC_0131DSC_0123DSC_0099DSC_0140Sassy has officially become my favorite word ever! I use it to describe everything from my husband (most used) to in this case, an article of clothing. These pants are the DEFINITION of sassy!! They make me feel confident and fashionable, which of course equate sassiness! They’re a ton of fun to wear and trust me, you’ll get lots of compliments on these babies. They’re another piece of fashion genius from the designer behind my fab top on Tuesday, Hilton Hollis. There is actually a matching vest that completes this look as a KILLER matching set, but I chose to style it a bit differently for y’all. The high waist on these pants are perfect for elongating your legs and just begs for a crop top to go with. This black boxy crop was the perfect compliment. I always like to keep things opposite- if my pants are tight, loose shirt and vice versa. As I’ve told y’all, I’m really into the minimalist look lately (so much chicer, right?) so I wore no jewelry and instead wanted to show off this FABULOUS bag from local designer of Garb Designs. Creator & designer, Montgomery Taylor, designs all of her bags from fabrics created from geological microscopic images- HOW cool is that?! I won’t spill too many of the beans on her though, because there’s an interview coming up soon! But, basically she’s a super cool chick with an amazing handbag collection! Keeping in tune with my simplicity phase (or is it a phase) I threw on my new fav heels from Bob Ellis Shoes. They’re SO simple, but SO fab at the same time!! This is such a fun, sassy look- just throw on a hot pink lip and you’re ready to hit the town running!! Well, maybe I won’t be running in these shoes!!

Don’t forget that Hilton Hollis himself will be at Maddison Row this evening from 4:30-7:00 and you can shop his designs there all weekend!! I hope to see all of you there!!

Back in Black

DSC_0041DSC_0071DSC_0049DSC_0063DSC_0085DSC_0073DSC_0093Obviously, my first outfit only post back after the New Year had to have a ridiculously cheesy title! On a real note though, creating a title for each post has got to be one of the biggest challenges. As I approach SMC’s 1 year birthday/blogiversary {but really, which is it?} I seriously worry I’ll start to run out of title ideas!! But, as goobery as the title might be, it’s very true to my current style situation. I’ve never really been a black kinda girl until the last few months and suddenly it’s all I ever want to buy! The key to keep yourself from wearing the same black Piko top over and over (you know who you are) is to find a few black pieces that are fashion forward, but still keep that chic, simple look. This top from Hilton Hollis, an up and coming designer out of New York City, does just that! It’s fun and sassy but still remains true to the comfort of wearing a simple black blouse. << PS- you can shop the Hilton Hollis line this weekend at Maddison Row in Charleston!! Join me as they kick off the trunk show Thursday evening with a cocktail party benefiting an awesome charity, One80 Place.-see below for more info >> I styled the top simply with dark denim and my equally sassy thigh high boots that always take any outfit to the next level. Of course, I couldn’t do without a pop of color! This beautiful turquoise tassel necklace from Peyton William was the perfect addition! I’m absolutely obsessed with the tassel trend and this necklace is certainly no exception. Side note: they also have some pretty adorable tiny tassel earrings that mayyy need to make their way to my jewelry box. Basically, if you haven’t stopped inside this local jewelry store on lower King, you’ve got to move that to the top of your list. And, if you aren’t local and haven’t visited Charleston, you need to start packing! I also love the pop of leopard with this bag that has become clutch in my wardrobe (okay, that was too much cheesiness for one post). But, there’s just something about the leopard and the turquoise that makes me really happy. I really just love this whole look!! It’s perfect for a winter night out (because you know you’re running out of those outfits) or even paired with black flats for a daytime look. ** also, sorry if ACDC is stuck in your head now, like it is mine.. #miserylovescompany

HILTON HOLLIS

My Favorite Basics + LaaLee Giveaway

DSC_0550Today I wanted to share with y’all some of my favorite basic pieces that are essentials in my winter wardrobe. I’ve also got a super exciting giveaway with a fabulous jewelry designer that will be starting today, with the winner being announced next Friday! But, more on that a little later. This outfit is basically (hehe couldn’t resist) made up of black and white pieces that are easy to mix and match with almost anything. The coat is a Calvin Klein piece that I’ve had for years and found at, get this, Costless Outlet for under $50. Despite it’s age, it’s very on trend this year with the oversized coat phenomenon. It’s the perfect simple wool coat that can be worn over practically any winter getup. Of course, I’ve got a similar option down in the links for y’all!DSC_0546DSC_0577DSC_0555The top may not be super wintery to those of you in places that actually get cold, but here in fickle weathered Charleston, tops like this are a must have. It’s a great choice to layer under a sweater or like I did here, throw a coat over. I love that it’s so simple and comfortable with the solid white tee-shirt style back, but looks put together with the silky fabric front. Also, something about those black and white stripes just exude elegance! A pair of black pants and a pair of leather leggings are both a wardrobe essentials these days, but why not combine them and have a simple leather stripe down the side of your black pants? It avoids the whole sweating in your leather leggings situation (you know you’ve been there) but still jazzes up the basic black pant. These are SO comfortable and very flattering, so they get my vote! DSC_0607DSC_0560DSC_0589Then there’s my newest spoil myself purchase, my YSL mini bag. I’m telling you, if you want to splurge and buy yourself a nice but practical bag, this is the way to go! I’m absolutely obsessed with this minimalist chic look. Of course, I couldn’t do an all black and white outfit without a little pop of color, so I threw on these fab red suede pumps. While they definitely stand out a bit more than the other pieces, I still consider these a winter basic because they go with so much! They’re great to throw on with anything black, white, leopard and I’m especially loving mixing red and pink or purple for the holidays. DSC_0624DSC_0628Y’all know I like to keep my jewelry simple, so a few dainty layered necklaces are always my go-to look. I love this “Mrs.” necklace that just screams “I’m so married” – if you don’t get that reference and haven’t watched the video you must! Then, there’s the bar necklace that really never leaves my neck. It can be layered with just about any other necklace whether it’s another simple gold piece, a long tassel style necklace or even a statement piece. It’s so simple, but so chic! DSC_0631Now, for what y’all have either a. have been waiting for or b. just scrolled down to the bottom to see (i’m totally onto you) – the giveaway info!! So, laalee is a beautiful jewelry line designed by the super sweet southern belle, Christy Mims, out of Lafayette, Louisiana. I originally came across her designs when I was searching for jewelry for my bridesmaids to wear in our May wedding. I was instantly drawn to her fashion forward, but antique inspired pieces, styled on beautiful vintage china. Her blush champagne teardrop earrings were exactly what I had been looking for to compliment my bridesmaid’s rosewater colored dresses. Christy was SO sweet and so easy to work with which was a huge bonus for me being a busy bride. I wound up getting my entire bridal party and family’s jewelry from laalee. There are so many colors and styles to choose from, she has something for every bride and wedding party. But, Christy couldn’t get rid of me after the wedding was over! Not only does she have the best selection of bridal party jewelry, but she also makes jewelry fit for everyday purposes. In comes that FAB bar necklace!! There’s a little bit of everything on her site from dainty necklaces and bangles to trendy druzy style jewelry, and YOU have the chance to win a $50 to her shop!! All you have to do is follow me (@southernmeetschic) and laalee (@laaleedesigns) on Instagram and comment “followed and entered” on any of the pictures posted in reference to the giveaway. This will run today through next Friday the 19th at noon and I will announce a winner at 5:00 on Friday afternoon. It doesn’t stop there though!! All of my SMC readers will shop for 15% off their entire purchase with the code 15OFF in the laalee shop!! Brides, this is the perfect time for you to check jewelry off your list!!

Today I decided to spice things up and have some midweek FUN and that’s what this get up is all about!! This is the perfect look for a girl’s night out on the town or for me, a fun fashion event. I’ve been really into the whole matching set look for several months now, and this is the same idea but jazzed up a bit! I fell in love with this top a while ago, but didn’t have anything in my closet to pair it with (my husband would beg to differ). When I saw the skirt I just knew it would compliment it perfectly! The caged sleeves on the top have been a super hot trend and take the crop top look from boring to bold. The graphic print on the skirt is gorgeous and adds a youthful, vibrant vibe to the whole outfit. The skirt can easily go from summer to winter by throwing on tights, booties and a black crop top sweater. You could also make this work environment friendly by trading the crop top for a blazer and stilettos for a nice pair of pumps or flats. This skirt is so versatile and such a fun statement piece to have in your closet!! Since the skirt is so busy, I did something I rarely do and matched my shoes to my top. I also kept accessories to a minimum with a fun bangle that had complimenting colors. I’ve recently been really into ponytails- not sure if it’s a new trend or if my hair is just driving me crazy. But, either way they can look super chic and this one does the trick for this outfit! Keeping my hair down would’ve taken away from the caged sleeves and not looked as polished. This is such a fun outfit to wear and will make anyone feel sassy and confident!!
