Summer

Pretty in…Purple?

southern-blogger-28

First, I want to thank everyone for the outpouring of love following yesterday’s post! I was beyond touched with all of your kind words and encouragement, and so thankful that I was also able to touch some of you with my experience. But, enough of the yucky feelings talk- today’s post is all about a dress that makes me feel good!! You know, that one you can put on no matter how down you are and still feel like a million bucks?! It’s all about finding the colors, shape and fit that’s flattering on your body and most importantly, makes you feel confident.

My favorite trend for summer has by far been off the shoulder tops and dresses. It’s a similar problem to my 2014 romper craze and I just can’t get enough of it. There’s something so sexy about a showing a little shoulder skin and I instantly feel feminine and confident in this style. Add in the gorgeous lace and hip hugging in just the right places and you’ve got yourself the perfect dress for date night or GNO! Bonus: it’s on sale right now for HALF OFF, and if you’re not one for color, it also comes in black.

Speaking of color, the description says “corn flower blue” and it appeared to be a soft baby blue. Clearly that is not the case. I’m not going to lie, when I got it in the mail I was really disappointed that it was more of a purple. My elementary, middle & high school colors were purple and white, so I’ve successfully kept it out of my wardrobe ever since graduation. I mean, a girl can only wear bright purple for so long. But, the more I stared at this dress in my closet, the more the color grew on me, and now I’m just plain obsessed! Purple had been so far gone from my life for so long that I almost feel like I’m discovering a new color to wear! Besides, this is more of a periwinkle than a true purple, so I don’t think I’ll get mistaken for a First Baptist student anytime soon. (because other than that I totallyyy look like I could pass as a high schooler-right?!)

Summer Nights

DSC_0593It’s been a little while since my last post, as we’ve been traveling most of spring, but I’m so excited to begin sharing our adventures with y’all! If you follow me on Instagram, you probably know I’m most excited to post about our California trip, but this evening I wanted to show you a look I wore while on a quick weekend getaway to Myrtle Beach. Now, the “dirty myrtle” isn’t the most luxurious destination, but we go every year for the Monday After the Master’s charity golf tournament, put on by Hootie and the Blowfish, and we always have a great time! Plus, it’s an easy 45 minute drive from home and who can say no to a little calabash shrimp buffet every once in a while?! (JOKING) Seriously though, it’s a weekend we look forward to every year and this year we were also able to spend it with my parents to celebrate my mom’s birthday! This evening’s look was what I wore to the M.A.M. concert that takes place after the tournament- talk about a good time!!
DSC_0602DSC_0588One of my absolute most favorite trends this summer is off the shoulder! The style is so feminine and flirty, and I love showing off my shoulders and collarbone. It’s something I can wear to be sexy without feeling overexposed. When I saw this top from one of my go-to brands, Show Me Your Mumu, I knew I had to have it! Not only does the white go with everything, but it really makes your tan skin glow after a long day on the beach. I paired the top with a pair of distressed boyfriend jeans to be sure to keep things casual and comfortable.
DSC_0620DSC_0606I accessorized with these fabulously boho layering necklaces from II Brunettes that have quite possibly been one of the best purchases I’ve ever made! I wear them together, separate, mixed with other necklaces- the options are seriously endless. I just love how the green pendant brings just a touch of color to this mainly neutral ensemble. I did stick with nude for my bag and shoes because I think it kept the outfit cohesive and classy. When in doubt- stick with neutrals!!  DSC_0590This is the perfect outfit for a summer night out to a concert, dinner date or drinks with friends. It’s super classy and put together, while still remaining casual and effortless, which is basically how I strive to look at all times {but realistically don’t}. If you wanted to dress this down even further for daytime, you could wear a pair of denim cutoffs with gladiator sandals and throw on a straw panama hat. (see below for this exact version on me!)

Have plans for a hot date or night out this weekend and not sure of what to wear? Look no further!! I’ve found THE  solution!! This gorgeous knit dress is the perfect combination of sexy and classy. The black and white print gives it a timeless southern ladylike look.  The curve hugging fit is super flattering and the flare at the bottom makes it a little more fun and flirty versus tight and sexy like a lot of body con dresses. It’s a great length and cut as to not show too much, but just enough! This dress can be worn by women of all ages from someone in their 20’s like me all the way up to someone in her 60’s. Since I’m on the younger side of that scale, I sexed it up and wore this dress with a pair of sky high nude sandals that have a combination of metallics in them. To keep with the nude trend and contrast this mainly black dress, I carried a simple nude clutch with gold detail. I always wear my hair long and voluptuous with a get up like this, so I wore some gold hoops to play that up. With a sexy little number like this, you are ready to flirt the night away but still keep your good girl reputation (or not…) Have a wonderful weekend everyone!!

Today I decided to spice things up and have some midweek FUN and that’s what this get up is all about!! This is the perfect look for a girl’s night out on the town or for me, a fun fashion event. I’ve been really into the whole matching set look for several months now, and this is the same idea but jazzed up a bit! I fell in love with this top a while ago, but didn’t have anything in my closet to pair it with (my husband would beg to differ). When I saw the skirt I just knew it would compliment it perfectly! The caged sleeves on the top have been a super hot trend and take the crop top look from boring to bold. The graphic print on the skirt is gorgeous and adds a youthful, vibrant vibe to the whole outfit. The skirt can easily go from summer to winter by throwing on tights, booties and a black crop top sweater. You could also make this work environment friendly by trading the crop top for a blazer and stilettos for a nice pair of pumps or flats. This skirt is so versatile and such a fun statement piece to have in your closet!! Since the skirt is so busy, I did something I rarely do and matched my shoes to my top. I also kept accessories to a minimum with a fun bangle that had complimenting colors. I’ve recently been really into ponytails- not sure if it’s a new trend or if my hair is just driving me crazy. But, either way they can look super chic and this one does the trick for this outfit! Keeping my hair down would’ve taken away from the caged sleeves and not looked as polished. This is such a fun outfit to wear and will make anyone feel sassy and confident!!

I’m going to go ahead and warn y’all- you will be seeing a lot of rompers in the near future! I’ve kind of gone a little crazy for them lately, especially with all of the adorable options they have at StyleDwell right now. They’re just so cute, easy and comfortable! I’ve also decided that they are the perfect piece to help you transition into fall. Now, I live in South Carolina, where we just had the hottest day of the year yesterday and it’s not getting cool anytime soon. So I’m not in any rush to transition to boots and sweaters, but I do like to start switching the colors I’m wearing and start covering up just a bit more. There is something about kids being back in school that makes it feel wrong to be walking around in shorts and a tank all the time. Rompers are the perfect in between, and this one especially. It’s still really loose and flowy, so great for this humid weather. But, it can also be worn well into fall by throwing on a sweater. This time of year I like to keep it to sandals. I mean seriously, boots in August, that’s a no-go. But, come October when it starts cooling down you can easily throw on a pair of knee high boots or booties with this. As usual, I kept accessories to a minimum and wore my gold arm cuff which I think plays into the boho vibe of the gladiators and this print. To add a touch of a classic look to this style, I wore a structured mini bag (another recent obsession of mine) that coordinated perfectly with the blue in the romper. This is the perfect daytime look for the next month or two and then adding the cooler weather items can even carry you into the month of October. Talk about multifunctional!!

Continuing on with our Maxi Monday Month of August is our last super summery goddess gown. This dress is literally the maxi of your dreams. I know that when I want to wear a long dress, it’s because I want something comfortable and easy breezy. This blue tie dye by Ava Sky is just that! It’s super easy to throw on and go, but at the same time makes a huge statement! Because it’s such a bold dress, I like to keep the accessories to a minimum. I wore a bangle on one arm and a nifty hand ring/bracelet on the other. They added just the perfect amount of boho to this carefree look. The length of the dress easily allows for a wedge, but I love how it flows with flats. I paired it with a simple pair of nude flats for an almost barefoot hippie look. This attire is perfect for just about any occasion, but I love it for a beach lunch or even a music festival. It is SUCH a fun look to wear and sure to take your maxi wardrobe up to the next level!

Today is one of my favorite posts yet! It may not be the most on trend fashionable outfit, but it’s a glimpse into a day in my real life and what I would be wearing for a bike ride in the park. Okay, so I MAY not always bike around with flowers in my basket, but I am a fresh flowers freak so you never know! The amazing pictures are again courtesy of Carissa Cady Photography. First, let me tell you about my baby, my bike! I absolutely LOVE her!! When I pictured myself having a beach cruiser for the first time years ago, this is exactly what I had in mind. The guys at Affordabike were so knowledgable and most importantly patient with me. I wanted specific colors for the bike, seat, handlebars, basket etc, it was all about the look for me, something that guys who work at a bike shop don’t really identify with. But, they were so nice and made sure I had my bike just the way I wanted it. Not to mention they have the most precious pit bull as their shop dog. Unfortunately, they wouldn’t let me take her home! I rode my bike home that day and the rest is history!! One of my favorite places to ride, and really just to go to in general, is Hampton Park. Up until last Friday, we lived only a block away and even just writing this post is making me a bit emotional about not being right there anymore. If you live in Charleston and haven’t been to Hampton Park, you’ve GOT to do something about it! It’s the perfect spot for a picnic, exercising or letting the dogs run around. As for my outfit, this is a pretty basic look that I feel any of you could put together. I do really love the colors of this shirt and the back button details. The white pants make the look super bright and cheery, perfect for a Spring or Summer day! The sandals are one of only two purchases {both shoes} that I made on my honeymoon in Italy. Overall, this is a pretty basic look that is easy to put together, but still adorable nonetheless.

Today’s post comes to you courtesy of the lovely Carissa Cady Photography. Carissa is a true California girl, but with some serious southern tendencies (the sweet tea drinking, pearl necklace wearing, y’all saying kinds). She loves Charleston so much that she decided to spend her summer here and I was lucky enough for her to find me (thanks Instagram!) and us get together for a shoot! Don’t worry though, if you love her work {duh} she’s willing to travel, especially to the south! Today also starts a series that I’m doing for the rest of the month of Maxi Monday’s. Each Monday I’m going to share with y’all some of my favorite maxi dresses, starting with the really summery and as the month goes on transitioning a bit more into Fall. Because, let’s face it, after months of warm weather we’re all sick of shaving our legs on the reg! Today’s is of course the most summery of the bunch. I am totally a seasonal person, not necessarily in the “you can’t wear white after Labor Day” way, but I like to take advantage of the time of year and dress appropriately. So, in Summer you will see me wear a lot of bright colors, making this the perfect maxi for the season! The print is absolutely beautiful and give you so many colors to work with. This style and color combo would look great with any body shape, skin/hair color or even age. I absolutely love the slits on each side of the dress that makes it feel a little sassy and sexy. Because the print is so busy, I kept accessories to a minimum with these gorgeous drop pearl earrings. I wore my white espadrille style wedges that were the perfect height for the length of the dress. I’ve been DYING for a bucket style bag and finally found this one at TARGET, yep that’s right. I feel like the bag keeps the outfit casual and perfect for lunch and a stroll around downtown.

WE ALL SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM!!! Since we’re in the dog days of summer, I decided to give y’all a glimpse of what I actually would like to be doing all.the.time at this point- eating ice cream!! It’s just so hot outside and the cold, sweet ice cream tastes soooo good!! These pictures were shot at my favorite spot in town for ice cream {and fries, BLT’s, hotdogs} Ye Ole Fashioned. I may be a little biased because my husband owns the two in Summerville and the rest are all owned by his family, BUT they were also voted Best Ice Cream in Charleston for a local City Paper contest {8 years in a row} that is a pretty big deal. So, the rest of Charleston agrees!! This flirty, fun dress (maxi version here for 30% off) is the perfect choice for something like going to have ice cream. The colors just pop off of it and instantly put you in a fun mood! It’s not just playful though, the low cut back also gives you a little bit of a sexy feel. Pair it with wedges for the perfect summer date night outfit! The light material makes it really breathable and great for hot summer days or nights. Since I was going for a daytime look, I dressed it down with these sandals. I like to think of these as my prettier version of a Birkenstock. They’re a little bulkier than your average sandal, but they still have the gold strap across the top that keeps them nice and feminine. They are perfect for adding a little chic-ness to this otherwise very girly dress. Considering the bright colors, I wore my blue mirrored aviators to play that up a bit more. This is a really fun summer outfit to wear that makes you feel sexy, fun and girly all in one!! Now, go get some ice cream!!! {see below for coupon}
