Friday Five- Valentine’s Edition

xoxovalentines-e1359248676412

Happy Friday the 13th/FRI-YAY/Valentine’s Eve/Day 2 of NYFW!!! Big day, huh?! Anyone else had a crazy Friday the 13th like I have? I won’t go into major detail, but my morning involved 13 degrees, giving a cab driver the wrong address, not realizing until he already left and being in the most impossible spot to find a cab (did I mention it was 13 degrees and I was dressed fashionably, not warmly). #firsttimenewyorker anyone?  Fortunately, I didn’t lose any extremities to frostbite and still made it to my show on time! Considering I’m here in New York, I’m not going to be bringing y’all a special Valentine’s outfit post (although, I will be posting next week about all of my NYFW looks). So, instead of my normal Friday Five post, I’m sharing with y’all 5 Valentine’s inspo outfits from bloggers I follow and love!! These looks are absolutely adorable y’all!! Everyone enjoy your Valentine’s Day tomorrow, whether it’s with your spouse or friends and family!! XO

1. Gal Meets Glam– Julia Engel does no wrong and this pretty little shoot with Chloé is no different! Like myself, she’s a major blush pink lover and this beautiful dress is blush pink heaven. I mean, she actually looks like she’s in heaven, right? And that bouquet of peonies *insert heart eyes emoji x 500*

2. Something Navy– Arielle knows exactly what she’s doing when it comes to dressing city chic! This red skirt number is perfect for a night on the town with your man or your girls! Plus, she’s THE best to follow for fitspiration..those legs!!

3. Hello Fashion Blog– This classic Valentine’s look from Christine is absolutely FLAWLESS. The red dress is sexy, but classy at the same time- perfect for a hot date! Bonus: she lists some great gift ideas for your guy and all under $50!

4. TopKnots and PolkaDots– This one just so happens to be from my pretty little bff miss Chloe Fusselman! Not only is she perfect and this shoot the most adorable thing I’ve ever seen, but her outfit is on point for a fun Valentine’s look! Could she not be Julia Engel’s (Gal Meets Glam) sister?!

5. Northern Lights- Southern Belles– Another blogger bestie of mine and the hottest momma I’ve ever seen, Tara Langdale, kills it with a Valentine’s casual look! Can you believe she’s hiding an almost 9 month baby bump in there?! In typical Tara fashion, she does the unexpected and pulls in a baby blue coat and it totally makes the outfit!

Also, feel free to take a little flashback moment and look through last year’s Valentine’s posts here, here and here – my how far this blog has come in just a year!! So fun to take a look back though!!

Monday Blues Pinks

DSC_5331

Of course, I had to kick off the Valentine’s week with a festive outfit post!! This amazing pink coat was the perfect thing to do the trick! Now, I’m normally not so much of a pink kinda gal, especially this bubblegum pink, but when I spotted this beauty at Sam’s Closet Boutique, I knew I had to have it. It’s good to step outside of your comfort zone every once in a while, right? This coat has not disappointed!! I love how I can throw it on over any simple outfit and instantly it pulls the look together, which is exactly what I did. The pink is here to stay, and not just for this week!!

DSC_5335

I couldn’t just have a statement coat with a boring outfit underneath!! Incoming to these statement cheetah print booties!! I had been eyeing these bad boys since fall, but never made the move. Then, I found them on sale in an after Christmas sale at II Brunettes and finally scooped them up. They’re really the perfect bootie! A. because cheetah/leopard is practically a neutral and can be worn with just about any color B. the pointy toe and calf hair makes them easy to dress up and finally, C. because they’re a wedge making them super comfy!! I’ve even got plans to wear them with jean shorts and a red peasant top in the warmer months!

My final statement piece of this look is my new blue Céline bag!! Thinking I’m crazy right about now for spending that much on a not so practical bag? I would normally NEVER do that, but I got this one at a STEAL from Saks off Fifth! It was already a quarter of the original price, then an additional 20% off and then I negotiated my way into another 15% so this was a legit deal!! It was just so so so beautiful, I couldn’t pass it up!! I’ve been kind of obsessed with that royal/cobalt blue color lately and love mixing it with other colors. Pink is a great one, but marsala/burgundy is also a great combo. Anyways, it was my one chance to buy a fun bag for a mere fraction of the normal price! I highly recommend going to check out your local outlet stores every once in a while. Often, you can negotiate a lower price on the pricier items that have been there a while!

DSC_5345

Also, can we talk about how great this last shot is?! I’m obsessed and it’s very rare that I’m obsessed with a picture with me in it! I can thank the awesome ladies behind Amore Photography, Shauntae and Laura, for these fab pics! Bloggers, whether local or not, if you’re in Charleston and need some blog pictures done, these girls run an awesome special!! It’s such a steal and they’re so much fun to work with!! I hope everyone has a wonderful Monday!! I’m headed out to NYC today for Fashion Week!! I could not be more ecstatic (minus those freezing temps). Be sure to follow me on social media to keep up with all of my New York adventures. And, don’t forget that I’m running an Insta giveaway, so be sure to enter! XO

Use it to find a great surprise for your mom, sister or that one friend you know is going to have a tough Feb. 14th this year. Or, show it to your man for a no brainer shopping list for you! Either way, you’ll be giving or receiving something sweet and pretty in pink this Valentine’s season!

1. Essie Polish in Fiesta– You can never have too many pink nail polishes!! Fiesta by Essie is my go-to!! It’s especially crucial to keep these polishes on hand if you’re a recovering gel nail addict like me. – $8

3. Kate Spade Cedar Street Maise Satchel in Rosy Dawn– Let’s look past that cheesy color description name and think about how great of a gift this would make for the woman in your life!! If you aren’t into the “rosy dawn” (gag) there are several other pink tones that would also be great for your Valentine! If you’re local to Charleston, you can also find this bag at Gwynn’s in Mt. Pleasant. – $298

4. Kate Spade Small Square Studs in Light Pink– Light pink sounds much better, right? (along with tons of other great Kate Spade gifts) – $38

5. Ahh-Larm– Nothing says “I love you” more than wanting to protect the women in your life! The Ahh-larm is an alarm, flashlight and stylish keychain all in one. Bonus: it’s a little on the large side, so losing your keys is never an issue! If you’re local to Charleston, you can find these at Out of Hand in Old Village. – $24.99

6. Moon & Lola Coffee Mug– Ahhh the gift that keeps on giving! Your Valentine will be reminded of how much you love them every time they pick up their mug and are told they’re gorgeous! This makes a great gift for someone that you don’t want to spend a ton, but want to make a big impact. – $28

7. Marysia Antibes Scalloped Bandeau Bikini– It’s never too early to start preparing for the warm weather!! This makes a great gift alone, or even better alongside plane tickets for 2 to Tulum! SMC Blogiversary

IMG_4742IMG_4739 copyDSC_5354DSC_5455DSC_5351 copy

Today, Southern Meets Chic officially turns one year old!! On one hand, it seems longer than a year because so much has happened, in life and with my blog. But, on another, it seems like a short amount of time because there’s so much further I want to go and so many more things I want to do. I never dreamed when I started my blog that in just one year I would be where I am now! My blog has opened doors and brought me opportunities that I might not have gotten otherwise. I’ve had the chance to work with countless local boutiques such as Trés Carmen Boutique, Gwynn’s, StyleDwell and Peyton William. Then there’s all of the amazing photographers I’ve gotten to shoot with, like the lovely ladies responsible for these perfect pictures, Shauntae and Laura of Amore Photography. There’s also Susan Lloyd Photography, Katie Capo of Catherine Ann Photography, Carissa Cady Photography and Terrence Edwards of Current Visuals. In September, I became the Charleston Market Editor for Carolina STYLE Magazine, which has brought me the opportunity to work with some extremely talented and amazing contributors on a daily basis! I’ve contributed to several other blogs such as Coastal Bride and Charleston Fashion Design. I’ve worked as a stylist or style assistant on some fabulous shoots with amazing teams and have another one of those coming up this week! Most recently, I’ve joined the Scarlet Plan & Design team as a Senior Bridal Stylist. And now, I’m getting ready to head to New York City for Fashion Week!! I am SO thankful to have all of these businesses and people in my life and to have been able to work creatively with each and every one of them! Additionally, I’ve made some of my absolute best friends through blogging!! The blogging community in Charleston is thriving and full of amazingly sweet and talented girls and women who all support each other in a fabulous way. Y’all are the BEST and i’m so blessed and happy to have met so many wonderful people with the same interests as me! Y’all know I love ya!!

IMG_4694 copy get-attachment.aspx-2get-attachment.aspx-3

Let’s reminisce for a minute and look back to how Southern Meets Chic came about… It all started as my New Year’s 2014 resolution! I had followed so many bloggers for so long and always thought to myself how much I would enjoy doing that! Todd and I were engaged, and I hadn’t been working for a year or two. Having worked all my adult life, it was a bit of a struggle for me to not have something of my own to do. I love being home with my husband, but I needed something to do on my own to fulfill myself more. That’s when I got serious about starting a blog. I made it my New Year’s resolution and purchased my domain on January 2nd 2014. I was trying to get everything perfect (which now I realize will never be that way) before my first post. But, mother nature had another idea!! If you’re a Charleston local, you’ll remember the “Snowmageddon 2014” aka the small ice storm that you northerners would laugh at, but, we never get anything like this!! The streets were snowy and trees completely iced over, making a beautiful backdrop for my first shoot! I didn’t have that great of an outfit to blog, but I was determined to get pictures in this rare scenery. To this day, those lavender Hunter boots remain my most pinned picture on Pinterest! I started SMC not with a business in mind, but as a creative outlet for myself. I needed something to put my heart and soul into that was just a project for me! I had no idea that it would grow as quickly as it has and that y’all would actually be interested in what I’m wearing and my silly and sometimes run on writing. I’m so incredibly humbled by all of you and thankful to have readers that engage and stick with me, even through weeks of no posts!! I cannot thank y’all enough for the past year of support and following!! It’s been a truly magical year and none of this would’ve been possible without my readers!!

IMG_4781IMG_4752 copyIMG_4753 copyglitter final

Last, but certainly not least, I have to thank my husband, Todd. Not only is he obviously a huge part of my life, but he is an integral part of Southern Meets Chic! While I’ve had the opportunity to work with tons of fabulous photographers, the majority of my pictures are taken by him. No, he’s not a professional photographer, but yes, he’s read manuals and taken classes and practiced, just to be able to take better photos for me. I must say, he’s gotten pretty darn good! I’ve dragged him all over town to take blog pictures, with minimal complaints. He puts up with having to take outfit pics in public and not touching his food before I snap an Insta. Basically, he’s the most patient man on this earth and I am so beyond blessed to have him! This blog truly truly would not be possible without him, whether it’s taking photos or encouraging me to do new things and take new business approaches, he is a driving force behind SMC. And although he says he wants to start a blog about how your spouse shouldn’t start a blog, I’m convinced he’s pretty into it!! Seriously though babe, I couldn’t do this without you and I love you so very much!!

I just want to thank all of you again- the businesses and people I’ve been blessed to work with, my readers and my husband and family- down to my Grandmother who reads every single post, I wouldn’t be where I am without any of you and I am so thankful to have all of you in my life! XOXO

My Favorite Basics + LaaLee Giveaway

DSC_0550Today I wanted to share with y’all some of my favorite basic pieces that are essentials in my winter wardrobe. I’ve also got a super exciting giveaway with a fabulous jewelry designer that will be starting today, with the winner being announced next Friday! But, more on that a little later. This outfit is basically (hehe couldn’t resist) made up of black and white pieces that are easy to mix and match with almost anything. The coat is a Calvin Klein piece that I’ve had for years and found at, get this, Costless Outlet for under $50. Despite it’s age, it’s very on trend this year with the oversized coat phenomenon. It’s the perfect simple wool coat that can be worn over practically any winter getup. Of course, I’ve got a similar option down in the links for y’all!DSC_0546DSC_0577DSC_0555The top may not be super wintery to those of you in places that actually get cold, but here in fickle weathered Charleston, tops like this are a must have. It’s a great choice to layer under a sweater or like I did here, throw a coat over. I love that it’s so simple and comfortable with the solid white tee-shirt style back, but looks put together with the silky fabric front. Also, something about those black and white stripes just exude elegance! A pair of black pants and a pair of leather leggings are both a wardrobe essentials these days, but why not combine them and have a simple leather stripe down the side of your black pants? It avoids the whole sweating in your leather leggings situation (you know you’ve been there) but still jazzes up the basic black pant. These are SO comfortable and very flattering, so they get my vote! DSC_0607DSC_0560DSC_0589Then there’s my newest spoil myself purchase, my YSL mini bag. I’m telling you, if you want to splurge and buy yourself a nice but practical bag, this is the way to go! I’m absolutely obsessed with this minimalist chic look. Of course, I couldn’t do an all black and white outfit without a little pop of color, so I threw on these fab red suede pumps. While they definitely stand out a bit more than the other pieces, I still consider these a winter basic because they go with so much! They’re great to throw on with anything black, white, leopard and I’m especially loving mixing red and pink or purple for the holidays. DSC_0624DSC_0628Y’all know I like to keep my jewelry simple, so a few dainty layered necklaces are always my go-to look. I love this “Mrs.” necklace that just screams “I’m so married” – if you don’t get that reference and haven’t watched the video you must! Then, there’s the bar necklace that really never leaves my neck. It can be layered with just about any other necklace whether it’s another simple gold piece, a long tassel style necklace or even a statement piece. It’s so simple, but so chic! DSC_0631Now, for what y’all have either a. have been waiting for or b. just scrolled down to the bottom to see (i’m totally onto you) – the giveaway info!! So, laalee is a beautiful jewelry line designed by the super sweet southern belle, Christy Mims, out of Lafayette, Louisiana. I originally came across her designs when I was searching for jewelry for my bridesmaids to wear in our May wedding. I was instantly drawn to her fashion forward, but antique inspired pieces, styled on beautiful vintage china. Her blush champagne teardrop earrings were exactly what I had been looking for to compliment my bridesmaid’s rosewater colored dresses. Christy was SO sweet and so easy to work with which was a huge bonus for me being a busy bride. I wound up getting my entire bridal party and family’s jewelry from laalee. There are so many colors and styles to choose from, she has something for every bride and wedding party. But, Christy couldn’t get rid of me after the wedding was over! Not only does she have the best selection of bridal party jewelry, but she also makes jewelry fit for everyday purposes. In comes that FAB bar necklace!! There’s a little bit of everything on her site from dainty necklaces and bangles to trendy druzy style jewelry, and YOU have the chance to win a $50 to her shop!! All you have to do is follow me (@southernmeetschic) and laalee (@laaleedesigns) on Instagram and comment “followed and entered” on any of the pictures posted in reference to the giveaway. This will run today through next Friday the 19th at noon and I will announce a winner at 5:00 on Friday afternoon. It doesn’t stop there though!! All of my SMC readers will shop for 15% off their entire purchase with the code 15OFF in the laalee shop!! Brides, this is the perfect time for you to check jewelry off your list!!

A Blogger Friendsgiving

dandy-boutique-fall-lookbook-122A few weeks ago, I had the most wonderful opportunity to sit down with some of my most favorite blogger friends for an early “friendsgiving” dinner/photoshoot. This was set up by another dear friend of mine, Alden Haviland of Rutledge Social Management and Consulting, for the Dandy Boutique Thanksgiving lookbook shot by Catherine Ann Photography. Sarah Murdoch of 428 Main Vintage Rentals brought an absolutely stunning setup that will put my table tomorrow to shame. We each got to style our own outfits from Dandy’s fall collection and brought our favorite holiday dish, which you may have seen mine on Monday was a yummy pumpkin cheesecake. It was a beautiful day spent with some of my favorite ladies!

She has a true passion for finding vintage pieces that need a little love and restoring them to give new life. She rents out everything from tables and lounge furniture to china and marquee lighting to add something special to any event or occasion. In fact, 428 Main provided lounge furniture, decorative tables, the cake table, cake plates and a Mr. & Mrs. marquee sign for our wedding this past May. All of her beautiful rentals truly made the ambiance and decor so much more special and unique. I was so thrilled when I heard she would be working her magic for this photo shoot, the combination of Dandy Boutique and 428 Main was the perfect fusion of vintage style! My only complaint is that Sarah’s not coming to my house to set everything up tomorrow! dandy-boutique-fall-lookbook-119dandy-boutique-fall-lookbook-123dandy-boutique-fall-lookbook-124I’ve already shared with y’all my serious obsession with the adorable Dandy Boutique, so I’ll try not to gush too much! All I’ll repeat is that it is basically shopping in Taylor Swift’s closet AKA classic girl heaven! (that’s classic, not basic) I love this very fall festive look that I put together. I think it’s the perfect style to wear to Thanksgiving dinner, not too dressy not too casual. Plus, the nice little empire waistline leaves plenty of room for seconds on your dinner plate! The colors just scream Turkey Day to me, with the deep burgundy and rich mustard. Of course, I HAD to add a flower crown to the situation, because you know I just LOVE Holly’s flower crowns!
dandy-boutique-fall-lookbook-176dandy-boutique-fall-lookbook-165I hope everyone has a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving holiday spent with your loved ones!! I am so grateful for each and every one of you and thank you for reading Southern Meets Chic!! XO

Thanksgiving Tradition

dandy-boutique-fall-lookbook-121Every family has their favorite holiday traditions, from decor they put out to activities they partake in. These traditions are what make the holidays special and memorable, year after year. Being the nostalgic I am, this is my favorite aspect of the holidays and what I truly look forward to as the season gets close. For my family, our most continued traditions are in food. We love to eat! Now, each year there is always something new on the table, but there are some staples that will always stay the same. At Thanksgiving, my GG always makes her dressing, my mom her sweet potato casserole and I try out a new cranberry recipe each year. But, perhaps the most special of these would be my Grammy and I making our pumpkin cheesecake. Now, I must preface this by saying is not originally a family recipe, but one she found in the newspaper. However, we have tweaked some things throughout the years and made it our own. She and I have been making this together every Thanksgiving for the past 14 years. It has gone from her doing most of the work and me being the assistant to now me doing the bulk of things and her being here for conversation and company. We’ve also gone from a hand mixer (only did that once-terrible idea, don’t try it) to a not so great standing mixer and now this year we’ve got a KitchenAid (thanks for the bridal shower present mom!). It is an evolving process, but one thing always remains the same and that is us doing it together. It is a tradition that I will always hold dear to my heart and hope to one day pass down to my children and grandchildren. Okay, enough of all the memory talk! Many family recipes are great big secrets, but what’s the point in that?! I’m so happy to share this recipe with y’all today and hope to maybe add a new tradition or at least a new dessert on your table this year!

Grammy’s Pumpkin Cheesecake

For the Crumb Crust:

1 cup graham-cracker crumbs (i use a little over a cup)

3 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons sugar

For the Pumpkin Filling:

2 packages cream cheese (8 0z each) softened

1 1/4 cups sugar

1 can solid-pack pumpkin

3/4 cup sour cream

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground allspice

1/4 teaspoon salt

4 large eggs

For the Nut Topping:

3 tablespoons melted butter

1/4 cup brown sugar

3 tablespoons pure maple syrup (the expensive, organic kind yes)

1 cup chopped walnuts

** You will need a 9×3 springform pan and a roasting pan for water bath

Crumb Crust:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees

2. In a small bowl, with a fork, stir crumbs, melted butter and sugar until moistened.

3. Pour mixture in springform pan and press with fingertips to bottom of pan.

4. Tightly wrap the outside of pan with heavy-duty foil (read: wrap a couple of layers with normal aluminum foil) This prevents leakage when baking in the water bath later.

5. Bake crust 10 minutes and set aside to cool completely.

Pumpkin Filling:

1. In large mixing bowl (again, this recipe really requires a standing mixer, or two people if you must use a hand mixer) Set your mixer on Medium speed and beat the cream cheese until smooth. Using SOFTENED cream cheese it THE most important aspect of this recipe. You’ll notice in my pictures you can see a few spots of cream cheese, that’s because I didn’t have it soft enough when I started (rookie mistake). If possible, leave it out overnight to make the next morning, but it needs at least 2 or 3 hours on the counter.

2. Once smooth, slowly beat in sugar until blended. This will take about 1 minute and you’ll need to stop and scrape the sides with a rubber spatula throughout.

3. With mixer at low speed, beat in pumpkin, sour cream, vanilla, cinnamon, allspice and salt.

4. After these are in, add eggs one at a time, beating just until blended after each addition.

5. Pour pumpkin mixture into crust and place springform inside of large roasting pan.

6. Place pan on oven rack. Carefully, pour enough boiling water into roasting pan to come 1 inch up side of springform pan.

7. Bake cheesecake about 1 hour and 10 minutes, or until the center barely jiggles.

8. Cool cheesecake completely on counter before adding topping.

Topping:

1. Mix together melted butter, brown sugar and maple syrup.

2. Add walnuts to mixture.

3. Carefully pour over cheesecake. (I like to just do in center, it just looks prettier than all over)

4. Refrigerate at least 3 hours or preferably overnight.

Obviously, the topping is optional. This is actually the first year I’ve used the topping and it was truly to make the pie prettier for this post. But, it was definitely yummy!! In the past, we’ve served it plain with Cool Whip. I think for Thursday, I will do it with the walnut topping, but also serve Cool Whip on the side!

VIP

unnamedThe time has come for me to tell y’all the big surprise I’ve been hinting at all week! You may have noticed that every look on SMC this week was head to toe Gwynn’s. If you’re not familiar, Gwynn’s is the only locally owned luxury department store in the Charleston area. They carry everything from home decor and cosmetics to menswear and of course, women’s fashion. They are always my first stop for designers such as Tory Burch, Kate Spade, Jimmy Choo and J. Brand. Starting tomorrow, every single piece that you saw on the blog this week is on sale! It doesn’t stop there though, because actually the ENTIRE STORE is on sale!! No restrictions, no limits, everything is anywhere from 10% to 70% off, even the big brands that hardly ever go on sale! Even better, the sale opens to the public on Sunday, but special VIP’s (read: you guys!) will get to shop the sale starting tomorrow!! That’s one day early to beat the crowd and get that item you’ve been swooning over! Don’t live in the Charleston area? No worries! Just give Gwynn’s a call and they will assist you with your purchase, plus give you free shipping!! After you’ve finished shopping for yourself, this is the perfect chance to knock some people off your holiday gift list. You really can find something for everyone on your list here. Just a little hint (and sneak peek into my gift guide coming in December): Brackish bow ties for the boys (particularly the Clemson/Carolina colors), Nest candle for your grandmother, Hunter boot liners for your little sis and Laura Mercier body scrub for Mom!! Plus, they offer beautiful complimentary gift wrapping, so you leave with a present that can go straight under the tree!

Here’s a little recap of this week’s looks from Gwynn’s that you can now find up to 70% off!!

Holiday Affair

Okay, I feel better now, but seriously I’m obsessed!! Want to know what else I’m obsessed with? The holidays, of course! Now, I’m not one of those that rushes through Thanksgiving just to get to Christmas. I like to savor each holiday as they come. But, while it may be too early for me to start decorating, it’s never too soon to start planning my holiday party attire! Those invitations will start coming sooner rather than later and you don’t want to be rushing around the day of (in Christmas shopping craziness) looking for something to wear. If they were to have “holiday cocktail dress” in the dictionary, this emerald beauty would be the definition. It’s classy, sassy and sexy all in one dress! Oh, and it’s so much fun to wear (if you can’t tell). This black fur jacket goes beautifully over it for the chilly weather and you could even add black tights if it’s really cold (aka not in Charleston). Anything embellished just screams festive, so these jeweled kitten heels were the perfect choice. I accessorized with these beautiful black and gold statement earrings that really keep the look classy. Then, to pull out the gold and jazz things up I carried this amazing clutch! It’s flashy, without being tacky. Head to toe this is a flawless look for any holiday party you have to attend. Whether it’s work, friends or family you’ll stand out but still stay appropriate! LOVE LOVE LOVE- okay, seriously i’m finished gloating over this look now!

Don’t forget I’ve got exciting news for y’all coming tomorrow evening!! Stay tuned to SMC tomorrow at 6:00 for the big reveal!!
