Black Bootie Dilemma 2014

I know, I know “black bootie dilemma” is a bit dramatic, but if you’ve been on the market for a pair, then you feel my pain! First of all, I’m a little picky when it comes to black and especially black leather. There’s just always been something about it that screams “BIKER CHICK” and as much as I love Sons of Anarchy, (so sad about tomorrow night) I don’t particularly want to dress like a cast member. Then, there’s the fact that every time I fall in love with a pair, the price tag quickly crushes all of my dreams. So, assuming that I’m not the only girl on the face of the earth having these issues, I thought a little Real vs. Steal black bootie edition would be the perfect way to kick off the week! (see what I did there)

The Everyday Suede Bootie:

I’m pretty sure that this is THE ONE for me! This style can go with everything from jeans and a sweater to tights and a nice dress. The mid-height heel keeps them comfortable, but still tall enough to give your legs a little Kendall Jenner effect. BONUS: they’re suede, so that rules out any biker babe confusion.

Rag & Bone Newbury / Sole Society Livvy

The Flat Bootie:

This minimalist chic style is for the girl who wants the look, but without the bother of a heel. These are so on-trend when paired with black leather skinnies or rolled up dark denim. Also, try replacing your classic ballet flats with these to take any outfit up a notch!

Lanvin Chelsea / Aldo Alieng

The Hot Heeled Bootie:

The sky high leather bootie is the best choice for any party girl! These are the ideal booties to dress up and wear out. The thin heel and pointed toe make this a dressier option and while not as practical as the first two, will definitely make you stand out in a crowd. This is a perfect replacement for black pumps in freezing temps.

A Blogger Friendsgiving

dandy-boutique-fall-lookbook-122A few weeks ago, I had the most wonderful opportunity to sit down with some of my most favorite blogger friends for an early “friendsgiving” dinner/photoshoot. This was set up by another dear friend of mine, Alden Haviland of Rutledge Social Management and Consulting, for the Dandy Boutique Thanksgiving lookbook shot by Catherine Ann Photography. Sarah Murdoch of 428 Main Vintage Rentals brought an absolutely stunning setup that will put my table tomorrow to shame. We each got to style our own outfits from Dandy’s fall collection and brought our favorite holiday dish, which you may have seen mine on Monday was a yummy pumpkin cheesecake. It was a beautiful day spent with some of my favorite ladies!

She has a true passion for finding vintage pieces that need a little love and restoring them to give new life. She rents out everything from tables and lounge furniture to china and marquee lighting to add something special to any event or occasion. In fact, 428 Main provided lounge furniture, decorative tables, the cake table, cake plates and a Mr. & Mrs. marquee sign for our wedding this past May. All of her beautiful rentals truly made the ambiance and decor so much more special and unique. I was so thrilled when I heard she would be working her magic for this photo shoot, the combination of Dandy Boutique and 428 Main was the perfect fusion of vintage style! My only complaint is that Sarah’s not coming to my house to set everything up tomorrow! dandy-boutique-fall-lookbook-119dandy-boutique-fall-lookbook-123dandy-boutique-fall-lookbook-124I’ve already shared with y’all my serious obsession with the adorable Dandy Boutique, so I’ll try not to gush too much! All I’ll repeat is that it is basically shopping in Taylor Swift’s closet AKA classic girl heaven! (that’s classic, not basic) I love this very fall festive look that I put together. I think it’s the perfect style to wear to Thanksgiving dinner, not too dressy not too casual. Plus, the nice little empire waistline leaves plenty of room for seconds on your dinner plate! The colors just scream Turkey Day to me, with the deep burgundy and rich mustard. Of course, I HAD to add a flower crown to the situation, because you know I just LOVE Holly’s flower crowns!
dandy-boutique-fall-lookbook-176dandy-boutique-fall-lookbook-165I hope everyone has a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving holiday spent with your loved ones!! I am so grateful for each and every one of you and thank you for reading Southern Meets Chic!! XO

Thanksgiving Tradition

dandy-boutique-fall-lookbook-121Every family has their favorite holiday traditions, from decor they put out to activities they partake in. These traditions are what make the holidays special and memorable, year after year. Being the nostalgic I am, this is my favorite aspect of the holidays and what I truly look forward to as the season gets close. For my family, our most continued traditions are in food. We love to eat! Now, each year there is always something new on the table, but there are some staples that will always stay the same. At Thanksgiving, my GG always makes her dressing, my mom her sweet potato casserole and I try out a new cranberry recipe each year. But, perhaps the most special of these would be my Grammy and I making our pumpkin cheesecake. Now, I must preface this by saying is not originally a family recipe, but one she found in the newspaper. However, we have tweaked some things throughout the years and made it our own. She and I have been making this together every Thanksgiving for the past 14 years. It has gone from her doing most of the work and me being the assistant to now me doing the bulk of things and her being here for conversation and company. We’ve also gone from a hand mixer (only did that once-terrible idea, don’t try it) to a not so great standing mixer and now this year we’ve got a KitchenAid (thanks for the bridal shower present mom!). It is an evolving process, but one thing always remains the same and that is us doing it together. It is a tradition that I will always hold dear to my heart and hope to one day pass down to my children and grandchildren. Okay, enough of all the memory talk! Many family recipes are great big secrets, but what’s the point in that?! I’m so happy to share this recipe with y’all today and hope to maybe add a new tradition or at least a new dessert on your table this year!

Grammy’s Pumpkin Cheesecake

For the Crumb Crust:

1 cup graham-cracker crumbs (i use a little over a cup)

3 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons sugar

For the Pumpkin Filling:

2 packages cream cheese (8 0z each) softened

1 1/4 cups sugar

1 can solid-pack pumpkin

3/4 cup sour cream

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground allspice

1/4 teaspoon salt

4 large eggs

For the Nut Topping:

3 tablespoons melted butter

1/4 cup brown sugar

3 tablespoons pure maple syrup (the expensive, organic kind yes)

1 cup chopped walnuts

** You will need a 9×3 springform pan and a roasting pan for water bath

Crumb Crust:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees

2. In a small bowl, with a fork, stir crumbs, melted butter and sugar until moistened.

3. Pour mixture in springform pan and press with fingertips to bottom of pan.

4. Tightly wrap the outside of pan with heavy-duty foil (read: wrap a couple of layers with normal aluminum foil) This prevents leakage when baking in the water bath later.

5. Bake crust 10 minutes and set aside to cool completely.

Pumpkin Filling:

1. In large mixing bowl (again, this recipe really requires a standing mixer, or two people if you must use a hand mixer) Set your mixer on Medium speed and beat the cream cheese until smooth. Using SOFTENED cream cheese it THE most important aspect of this recipe. You’ll notice in my pictures you can see a few spots of cream cheese, that’s because I didn’t have it soft enough when I started (rookie mistake). If possible, leave it out overnight to make the next morning, but it needs at least 2 or 3 hours on the counter.

2. Once smooth, slowly beat in sugar until blended. This will take about 1 minute and you’ll need to stop and scrape the sides with a rubber spatula throughout.

3. With mixer at low speed, beat in pumpkin, sour cream, vanilla, cinnamon, allspice and salt.

4. After these are in, add eggs one at a time, beating just until blended after each addition.

5. Pour pumpkin mixture into crust and place springform inside of large roasting pan.

6. Place pan on oven rack. Carefully, pour enough boiling water into roasting pan to come 1 inch up side of springform pan.

7. Bake cheesecake about 1 hour and 10 minutes, or until the center barely jiggles.

8. Cool cheesecake completely on counter before adding topping.

Topping:

1. Mix together melted butter, brown sugar and maple syrup.

2. Add walnuts to mixture.

3. Carefully pour over cheesecake. (I like to just do in center, it just looks prettier than all over)

4. Refrigerate at least 3 hours or preferably overnight.

Obviously, the topping is optional. This is actually the first year I’ve used the topping and it was truly to make the pie prettier for this post. But, it was definitely yummy!! In the past, we’ve served it plain with Cool Whip. I think for Thursday, I will do it with the walnut topping, but also serve Cool Whip on the side!

VIP

unnamedThe time has come for me to tell y’all the big surprise I’ve been hinting at all week! You may have noticed that every look on SMC this week was head to toe Gwynn’s. If you’re not familiar, Gwynn’s is the only locally owned luxury department store in the Charleston area. They carry everything from home decor and cosmetics to menswear and of course, women’s fashion. They are always my first stop for designers such as Tory Burch, Kate Spade, Jimmy Choo and J. Brand. Starting tomorrow, every single piece that you saw on the blog this week is on sale! It doesn’t stop there though, because actually the ENTIRE STORE is on sale!! No restrictions, no limits, everything is anywhere from 10% to 70% off, even the big brands that hardly ever go on sale! Even better, the sale opens to the public on Sunday, but special VIP’s (read: you guys!) will get to shop the sale starting tomorrow!! That’s one day early to beat the crowd and get that item you’ve been swooning over! Don’t live in the Charleston area? No worries! Just give Gwynn’s a call and they will assist you with your purchase, plus give you free shipping!! After you’ve finished shopping for yourself, this is the perfect chance to knock some people off your holiday gift list. You really can find something for everyone on your list here. Just a little hint (and sneak peek into my gift guide coming in December): Brackish bow ties for the boys (particularly the Clemson/Carolina colors), Nest candle for your grandmother, Hunter boot liners for your little sis and Laura Mercier body scrub for Mom!! Plus, they offer beautiful complimentary gift wrapping, so you leave with a present that can go straight under the tree!

Here’s a little recap of this week’s looks from Gwynn’s that you can now find up to 70% off!!

City Sleek

southern-meets-chic-gwynns-51 southern-meets-chic-gwynns-57southern-meets-chic-gwynns-56southern-meets-chic-gwynns-54southern-meets-chic-gwynns-52A head to toe dark look is not something you’ll see me do often, but black has recently become one of my favorite colors to wear. I slowly see it seeping into my wardrobe and a lot of my favorite tops to throw on and feel myself in, are black. There’s just something so chic about a full dark outfit and this one does not disappoint. This velvet navy and black sweater is to die for!! The mix of colors and textures translate beautifully making this a very versatile piece. You can easily make it super fancy with a fun skirt for a night out or dress it down with boyfriend jeans and sneakers. I went somewhere right in the middle, pairing it with equally sleek leather leggings. Throw on a pair of classic black pumps and you’ve got the city girl look down! But, we wouldn’t want a city girl to look boring now would we? That’s why I had to add this fun statement necklace. This is THE perfect statement necklace to have in your wardrobe! With the combination of colors, you can literally wear this necklace with anything. Bonus: it’s got a magnetic clip in the back. No more frustration over not being able to get your necklace hooked! For a beautiful contrast of color, I wore this with a structured cranberry handbag. I am kind of obsessed with navy and cranberry colors together for fall and these are the perfect shades to compliment each other. Throw on a dark lip and pulled back hair and you’ve got a chic look that can easily take you from the office to date night!

Yesterday it was plaid and leopard, today it’s stripes and spots? Not totally clear on the exact label of the print on this top, but I’m really into it! What the pictures don’t show is that it also has a hint of gold glitter! Gold, glitter, pattern mixing- I’m sold!! I love this look because it’s so fashion forward, but also so comfortable. These literally feel like pajamas!! This is the perfect “run errands while looking chic attire” AKA every Tuesday. It could easily be dressed up with a pair of strappy heels, but I like to keep it casual with classic quilted flats. To pull out the gold in the top and embellishment on the shoes, I wore it with a strand of my favorite Charleston Rice Beads. These can instantly jazz up any outfit and give your look that perfect finish. To contrast the red, black and white I added this bright blue bag. A little pop of color can really add some fun to your look and give you a put together look that you wouldn’t even expect!

Fall, is that you?

southern-meets-chic-gwynns-5 southern-meets-chic-gwynns-6It’s a very special week here on SMC!! Most exciting for me is that I’ll be writing all of these posts while cruising the Caribbean with my hubby for his birthday (follow me on Insta to stay updated). Most exciting for my readers is that I will be doing an outfit post every day this week AND have a big surprise for y’all on Friday evening!! I’ve teamed up with Gwynn’s to style some absolutely fabulous fall and winter looks this week, so every item you’ll see posted this week is coming from them. If you see something you’re interested in, give them a call! They offer free shipping and if you’re out of state, no taxes! Also, every picture you’ll see this week was taken by the lovely Catherine Ann Photography. She specializes in weddings and women’s portraits- check out her Instagram, it’s to die for!! Hellooo Pinterest wedding inspo board!

southern-meets-chic-gwynns-16southern-meets-chic-gwynns-9 southern-meets-chic-gwynns-3southern-meets-chic-gwynns-10southern-meets-chic-gwynns-1The first look I’m bringing you from Gwynn’s is absolutely perfect for ringing in this chilly cold front we’ve gotten. Dare I say the fall weather is finally here to stay?! Either way, this amazing plaid coat can take you from fall to winter so you’ll definitely be wearing it for months to come. I’m loving just about every oversized coat that crosses my path this year, but the colors and print on this plaid beauty stole my heart! I layered it over a fun graphic tee that is fit for a queen (couldn’t resist) and the COMFIEST skinny jeans you’ll ever put on. Seriously, I did not want to take them off! I love that they are distressed and have torn hems at the bottom to give them a bit of that grungy look. I kind of feel like this whole outfit has a bit of a rock and roll vibe, but it doesn’t go overboard and still stays in the classically chic realm. This plaid on the coat is the best print for fall pattern mixing and leopard just goes beautifully with it! Leopard + this plaid = soul mates, for real. I always say subtle pattern mixing is a great way for someone who doesn’t normally take chances with fashion, to step outside their box. As usual, I accessorized pretty simply with this dainty but fabulous layered necklace. This is a great necklace for those who love the layered look but without all the fuss. Add a big oversized bag to go with your big oversized coat and you’re ready to go!!

Furriday

DSC_0229 DSC_0250DSC_0260DSC_0240DSC_0244DSC_0231DSC_0262Or should I say BRRRIDAY?! Okay, that was super lame, but it is unusually chilly outside today! This cooler weather makes it the perfect first day to share my new fur vest with y’all. I say “first” because you will definitely be seeing it more often than once. It has quickly become my staple outerwear piece. I can throw it on with any casual outfit and instantly feel chic and put together. Not to mention, it keeps me super warm! It can be easily dressed up or dressed down. Today I’m sharing with y’all a very casual look. Everyone loves a plaid shirt for fall, right? But, instead of pairing it with the normal puffy J Crew vest (no offense J Crew, ya know I love ya) I wanted to add a little more style by wearing the fur. Throw on your favorite skinny jeans and a pair of boots and you’re ready to go! I kept accessories simple with my go-to bangles and tied in the navy colors with this cute clutch. This is a great daytime outfit but can also take you into night thanks to the vest and clutch. Something of this sort has basically been my uniform all fall and it’s so comfy but also keeps you feeling cute!! Happy Furrriday everyone and enjoy your weekend!!

Fine & Dandy

042A7959Fine and Dandy Boutique that is!! I was so happy to collaborate with Dandy Boutique and the adorable Taylor from Holy City in Heels on this fun, playful shoot for Rutledge Social shot by Terrence from Charleston Street Style. Dandy has quickly become one of my favorite stops when shopping in downtown Charleston and has even given me a new little twist in my style. I like to tell owner, Holly McGetrick, that shopping in her store is like shopping in Taylor Swift’s closet. The new bob and bangs T-Swift, not old school, country spiral curls T-Swift. The charming store is full of vintage inspired duds that perfectly combine classic styles with modern influences, think Allie Hamilton from the Notebook meets Audrey Hepburn. I just love how feminine and put together all of her pieces make me feel! Holly and the overall style of Dandy Boutique has definitely inspired me to add a little more of a vintage 1950’s feel to my wardrobe lately.

042A7985 042A7991 042A7993Not only is Holly super stylish, but she’s also pretty darn crafty! She hand makes STUNNING floral crowns like these and does beautiful custom bridal hair pieces. Anyone who knows me, knows I LOVE any sort of hat or head piece and ESPECIALLY floral crowns! I think they are the perfect addition to any outfit for a special event, professional photos or even just because. This dress just complimented the floral crown so beautifully. The combination of the feminine lace and the fall cranberry color make this look flawless. To keep the outfit autumnal and somewhat casual, I wore a suede bootie. This dress could also easily transition to winter by instead wearing black tights and black booties, a big flashy statement necklace and a black fur shrug with a huge fancy topknot for a glamorous holiday party look!

042A8125042A8128042A8140042A8110I have a serious obsession with embellishments this year, so be prepared to see a lot of them especially during the holiday season! A little beading or bling is just so perfect to jazz up an otherwise basic piece of clothing. But, it also still keeps things simple and understated which I love! I’m definitely a “less is more” kinda gal! This icy gray/blue sweater is ideal for the coming winter months. You can dress it up with a skirt, like I did with this navy blue quilted skirt. Or, throw it on with a pair of jeans and boots for a chic comfy look! This is that sweater you’ll wear over and over again and is just a no brainer to throw on when you feel like you’ve got nothing to wear! (Read: all the time)

Cuts & Kimonos

DSC_0226DSC_0202 DSC_0221DSC_0201DSC_0218DSC_0224DSC_0197DSC_0196

Notice anything new or different **insert hair flip** That’s right, I chopped off all my long locks!! This is literally the shortest my hair has ever been in my life, well minus that time when I was 2 and the hair was just growing on my head, and I could not be happier!! My long hair was just getting to be such a bother and a bore. I feel like this sassy new do is so much more ME and significant of where I am in my life at the moment. Normally, I cry for at least 2 days after I do anything major to my hair, but this time I haven’t shed a single tear! My hairstylist, Ashley Fisher of Ash & Co, is just the absolute best!! Not only is she a super cool chick that I immediately clicked with over our mutual love for trash reality tv and obsessive beauty product buying, but she truly is an artist at what she does. When I sit down in her chair I feel fully confident in what she’s about to do. I basically just give her an idea of what I want and say “but you do what you think” which for a crazy control freak like me is HUGE!! In a nutshell I’m obsessed with my new hair and Ashley!! Another thing i’m obsessing over lately is KIMONOS!! If you’re like me, you kind of thought that they were only for summer, but boy were we wrong!! I’ve seen more kimonos in stores lately than ever and I’m loving the concept of layering them for fall! It’s perfect if you’re in an area, like Charleston, where the weather is 40 degrees one day and 75 the next. Also, a kimono purchase is definitely a logical one because it can take you into summer! They’re perfect to layer over tanks with cutouts or my favorite way, as a bathing suit cover up. But, to keep up with the cool autumn weather, I decided to layer  over a long sleeve tee. This outfit would have been your basic fall look, boots and a pike, borrrinngg. But, the kimono spices things up to make this boho fabulous! I absolutely love the contrast of colors with the turquoise and rust and also the contrast of styles. The 7 layer beaded necklace is a little preppy and the kimono very boho but when put together balance each other out perfectly! This is my ideal autumn attire and a great look for any fall activity!!
